Bobby is a fine Montana artist, an engaging speaker, and student of Walter Hook. Like her mentor, as an educator she has shared her talents with others. At her 11 a.m. gallery talk, Bobby will explore another similarity as she discusses "Humor and Wisdom, Walter Hook's Influences."

HOOKedon Art celebrates its 7th year with a gallery talk by our featured artist Bobby Tilton and a salute to Walter Hook by the Missoula Art Museum. To honor Walter Hook's teaching legacy, Bob Phinney instructs Bonner School art students and Walter Hook Art Scholarships are available for Bonner students for summer classes at the Missoula Art Museum courtesy of our generous HOOKed on Art sponsors!

Bobby Tilton, featured artist

Bobby is a fine Montana artist, an engaging speaker, and student of Walter Hook. Like her mentor, as an educator she has shared her talents with others.

Artist's statement: I was born in Great Falls, Montana and raised on a farm in the little Belt Mountains. Farm life provided a wealth of experiences that have continually informed my art making. Observation, vulnerability, problem solving, independence and grace were all present in my childhood. My interest in Art began with my ability to draw as a second grader and was honed over the years by many gifted and caring teachers. I began my teaching career as a full time kindergarten teacher and taught Art K-12 for 9 years in the Missoula public schools. I have a Masters degree in Administration and an MFA in Sculpture. I currently am a full professor in the School of Art at The University of Montana.

Just as Walter Hook took inspiration from many subjects and mediums, Hooked on Art transforms Bonner School into a gathering of delights for the eyes, ears, tastebuds, and the soul. For the ears, the sweet sound of music.

 

 

Cece & Callie Monroe

Cece Monroe began her music studies peering into a piano to see where the sounds came from. After 4 years of playing piano, she fell in love with the sounds of the cello. Her first cello studies were joyously creative through Jen Slayden. From fiddling to Faure, Coldplay to Bach and Kid Cudi to Modest Mouse, she enjoys a vast genre of music. She is co-principal in the Missoula Youth Symphony as well as co-principal in the Advanced Orchestra at Hellgate High School. A freshman at Hellgate, Cece now studies with the professor of cello, Fern Glass, at the UM.

Bella Chorda Guitar Ensemble

 

The Childbloom Bella Chorda Guitar Ensemble performs complex acoustic instrumental arrangements of world, jazz, and classical pieces, spanning sounds from Bach to Bossa Nova. The members of the classical guitar quartet are Duggan Backhouse-Prentiss, Arthur Befumo, and Jenna and Jamie Wevers, under the direction of Childbloom Guitar Program Director and Instructor Nathan Zavalney. They have been performing in Missoula since 2006 in a variety of venues including Montana Public Radio, Out to Lunch, River City Roots Festival, Big Sky Film Festival, the Missoula Art Museum, and Missoula First Night.

John Floridis

John Floridis is a Missoula, Montana based guitarist, singer-songwriter and composer. He has been a resident in the "Big Sky" since 1993 having moved there from the strong shouldered, down-but-never-out city of Cleveland, Ohio. He has released 5 recordings mixing bluesy, folk-rock vocal tunes with adventurous solo acoustic guitar compositions including one seasonal recording "December's Quiet Joy." He has been named Missoula's best musician by the Missoula Independent and performed in the Western region for over a decade. He has performed with artists as diverse as Shawn Colvin, Derek Trucks, Patty Griffin, Richard Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, Kelly Joe Phelps, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Patty Larkin. John also fronts Burning River, a blues-funk-rock concept that performs in the Western region. He is also a producer of programs for Montana Public Radio and a former Registered Music Therapist. John Floridis performs with guitar, vocals and sometimes manipulated, sampled and looped sounds.

Blue Mountain Music Makers

 

The Blue Mountain Music Makers made their debut at Hooked on Art in 2009. Since then they have enjoyed playing their mix of bluegrass, old time fiddle and folk music at several venues, including Community at the Confluence, Paw's Up Ranch, River City Roots Festival,The Peas farm, Monarch Fiddle Camp and private parties.The members of this family band are: mom Jen on guitar/cello, niece Maddi on fiddle, mando, and ukelele, son Riley on banjo, and daughter Grace on fiddle. This will be their fourth appearance at Hooked on Art.

ACCLAIM, barbershop quartet

ACCLAIM loves making beautiful music together and sharing that music with audiences around Missoula and western Montana. A barbershop quartet from Missoula featuring lead Jan Drahos,tenor Laurie Suprock, baritone Donna Trowbridge and bass Cindy Morin, they are members of the Five Valley Chorus and Region 24 of Sweet Adelines International.

The Treble Makers

Morgan Solonar, Clarinetist

Ray Charles once said, "I was born with music inside me. Music is one of my parts, like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me, like food or water." For Morgan Solonar, that is absolutely true.

In the five years Morgan has been playing the clarinet, she has been a member of Missoula All City (Middle school) wind ensemble for two years, and as a freshman at Hellgate High School, is a member of the All State Band, Missoula Youth Symphony, and is currently taking lessons from Chuck Florence.

In addition to the clarinet, Morgan also plays the piano, the saxophone, and plans to learn the bagpipes. Morgan hopes to study music later in life, and to one day become a recording clarinetist.

Olivia Adams, Oboeist

Olivia started playing the oboe in fifth grade and has continued playing for the past five years. She was invited to participate in the UM Summer Band Camp after 5th grade, despite the fact she was too young. She became a member of the All-City Winds from 2009-2011, became first chair in the Symphonic Band at Hellgate High School, made it into the Missoula Youth Symphony, and is currently taking lessons from Rebecca Pershouse. Olivia hopes to take her music career into the future and possibly major in musical performance, teaching, and hopefully have the opportunity to make recordings.

As Billy Joel once said, "I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music."

History of Hooked on Art

 

Hooked on Art, established in 2006, is a natural celebration for Bonner. Walter's friends and admirers had long felt a tribute was overdue. After the Friends of Two Rivers first successful Confluence Day, Erickson's and Matson's were celebrating with a burger at the River City Grill where they met Vic and Ilona Hangas. Appreciative of the natural resource festival, Vic's comment, "What we really need is to honor Walter Hook." With that comment, a new Bonner tradition was born and is celebrated every year on the Saturday before Valentine's Day.

Biography

Artist Statement

My current work involves creating garments/skins that are metaphors for experiences, memories or societal roles. These “skins” or hides can be conceptually shed or worn. I am ultimately interested in how identity is constructed and try to make sense of power and vulnerability through the construction of psychological outfits. This work helps me question cultural roles on a personal and universal level.
Process/Materials
I make the “skin” from dress pattern paper fused to plastic sheeting with acrylic polymer.I use actual patterns when it fits the content or make yards of the skin on unprinted paper I acquired from Simplicity Pattern Company and invent my own patterns. The process of sewing is comforting and easy for me. My mother taught me how to sew and I use her machine and many of the objects that she used when she made clothing and quilts for her family.

The Missoula Art Museum is proud to participate in the 7th Annual Celebration of HOOKed on Art with an exhibit entitled "Hook’s Fauna from the Missoula Art Museum’s Permanent Collection." This exhibit of artworks brings to the viewer’s attention Hook’s wry humor, playfulness, and technical mastery as he deals with this fond subject matter.
