The Clark Fork River, a reservoir in 1908, received massive amounts of toxic sediments in the flood of 1908. Today, Milltown Dam has been removed and it is expected that 2.2 million cubic yards of toxic sediments will have been excavated and sent to an upriver repository by late summer 2009. In the meantime, restoration has begun and redevelopment plans call for the site to become a state park.

While the Blackfoot River was not contaminated, the 5 bridges crossing it needed to be replaced or redesigned to accommodate the free flowing river. The area above the Black Bridge will anchor the Gateway of the proposed state park and a trail will follow the Blackfoot under the bridges to the confluence area and eventually to a planned pedestrian bridge crossing the Clark Fork and linking to the Kim Williams Trail.
